ramay junior high
Fayetteville, AR
The new Ramay Junior High School is nestled within an existing oak-savannah woodland forest in the heart of Fayetteville - a setting rich with educational opportunity and rugged natural character. Working closely with architects Lake | Flato and Crafton Tull, Prism Design Studio's site design embraces the existing landscape, pushing toward a vertical "cabin in the woods" concept rather than the typical sprawling single-story layout - concentrating development on the lower hillside to preserve the tree canopy, protect wildlife habitat, and create an immersive outdoor learning environment.
Arrival to campus begins with a new intersection on College Avenue, with an undulating road winding through the forest to the entry - keeping traffic off neighborhood streets and setting the tone before students ever reach the door. Outdoor spaces include outdoor classrooms, pollinator gardens, and rainwater harvesting features that double as hands-on learning opportunities. A shared-use bike and pedestrian trail connects to surrounding neighborhoods and the broader Fayetteville trail network. Native plantings, on-site stone, and salvaged hardwoods are woven throughout, creating a seamless transition between preserved forest and new campus.
