We partnered with Rogue Trails and Arkansas State Parks to develop a comprehensive master plan for Petit Jean State Park focused on enhancing recreation, accessibility, and visitor experience while preserving the park’s unique natural, cultural, and historic character. The plan evaluated existing conditions across the park and established a long-term vision for improvements related to trails, lodging, mobility, water recreation, operations, and outdoor amenities. Recommendations included expanded hiking and mountain biking opportunities, upgraded campgrounds and recreation facilities, improved ADA accessibility and wayfinding, and new strategies for managing circulation and visitor access throughout the park. The plan also emphasized balancing future growth with stewardship of Arkansas’s first state park and its nationally recognized Civilian Conservation Corps-era resources.
A major highlight of the master plan is the proposed adventure recreation network centered around the park’s dramatic bluff systems. Palisades Overlook and Red Bluff were identified in a previous study as priority locations for a potential via ferrata experience, introducing a unique, tethered cliffside attraction to the park. The proposed course would extend approximately 1,600 feet and feature classic Italian-style via ferrata elements including rungs, anchors, safety cables, and aerial walkways designed to immerse visitors in the park’s rugged terrain and panoramic views. Additional recommendations explored opportunities for bouldering, rock climbing access, overlook enhancements, emergency access improvements, and supporting visitor infrastructure, positioning the park for an updated premier destination for outdoor recreation and adventure tourism.
